The Tragic Death Of A Young Woman Caused By Accidental Paracetamol Overdose -- By Laurie Whyman
How easily the most widely used pain relief can cause fatal liver failure
Posted: Thursday 15th December 2011
A young woman from Wales has died from liver failure caused by unwittingly taking too many paracetamol tablets as pain relief after a routine procedure to remove benign lumps from her breasts.
Desiree Philips, was taking just a few more than the recommended dose of the most widely used painkiller, to combat the pain after the operation, but nine days after the procedure, she was admitted to hospital with liver failure and even though she underwent a liver transplant, she died a week later in Birmingham Queen Elizabeth Hospital, a tragic waste of a young mother's life.
This type of accidental overdose has become known as a “staggered overdose”by health professionals and is difficult to diagnose, unlike the deliberate overdoses taken by people attempting suicide, which shows up easily by a blood test. In a staggered overdose, the amount of paracetamol in the blood is difficult to ascertain whether it is above a safe level or not.
This dreadful waste of a young life highlights the danger of an accidental overdose of paracetamol because it is widely used in cold and 'flu remedies as well as in the conventional tablet form, and unless extreme caution is taken, it is very easy to exceed the safe dosage, which according to NHS guidelines, is no more than two 500mg tablets every four to six hours, for a maximum of four times a day, and great care is needed not to combine this dose with other products which also contain paracetamol.
