But there is increasing evidence that insoluble roughage such as bran can irritate the bowel and aggravate conditions such as colitis and irritable bowel syndrome.
But soluble roughage as in fruit and vegetables is really good for easing the problem of constipation, plus a diet high in fruit, salad and veg. also helps to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
However there are a few causes of constipation that are not well known, and the most surprising one is the over use of laxatives, which just makes the body rely on them, and the bowel gets "lazy"
Another cause is eating to much cheese and other low fibre dairy produce, red meat, eggs and processed food.
Chocolate is another culprit, also many analgesics can "bung" you up, and the obvious ones of "holding on" for to long before evacuating the bowel,eating a low fibre diet, not drinking enough fluid and not taking enough exercise
Some people have a problem with taking iron or calcium supplements, and also some prescription drugs can have constipation as a side effect.
So if you have suffered with constipation for more than a few days, and even after changing your diet to a one high in fruit and vegetables, and lower in the foods mentioned earlier, you are still constipated, a visit to your doctor to rule out any medical condition that may be the cause, would be advisable
