A new cannabis derived drug is to be trialed for terminally ill cancer patients for the first time at Manchester General, and Fairfield General Hospitals.
The British made drug "Sativex" can be sprayed under the tongue for pain relief up to 10 times a day, and it is hoped to benefit those who can't get adequate pain relief from other drugs including morphine.
Sativex had been prescribed for M.S for about a year, but has not been in use in hospitals before.
For years M.S. sufferers have had to break the law to get hold of cannabis to relieve their symptoms, and many have fell foul of officious police drug squads,( who have improved their arrest 'stats by "nicking" these easy targets!) So at last after decades of M.S. patients advocating using cannabis to ease their suffering,(with many "experts" denying the effectiveness of "pot") can now legally ease their symptoms with Sativex.
The only bad news is for some that this new drug does not have the hallucinogenic effect that cannabis has, only the pain relief element, which at least removes it's chances of ending up as another "commodity" for the drug dealers, if it is over prescribed by lax doctors
