I expect a lot of you have heard about a “wonderful, easy exercise program” that will get you losing weight in a few weeks, from a friend who “knows someone who has had unbelievable results with it”and in desperation you consider giving it a try!

But this is just one of these exercise myths:

  • Doing abdominal crunches will remove belly fat. According to WebMD.com, crunches may not remove fat, although they will improve your abdominal strength, it is not possible to to specifically target the areas you wish to lose fat.

  • You have to sweat, or you will not achieve any results: NOT TRUE! Even as little as 15 minuets brisk walking a day is good for your general health, or even light weight training, which will probably not get you sweating, but never the less will be beneficial for you health and well being

  • Using exercise machines will stop you from over doing your training. Again NOT TRUE, many think that as the machines can be programmed to amount of weight they wish to lift that the machine will do the rest, but unless they have the machine correctly set to their height and weight, plus having a personal trainer to show them the correct techniques to use the machine, they can easily injure themselves

  • The often quoted”NO PAIN—NO GAIN, phrase is a dangerous myth, if you are hurting whilst exercising, it's probably your body telling you you are over doing it!, a little stiffness or soreness in the muscles the next day is normal though. This no pain -no gain phrase probably originated from professional athletes trying to push their bodys through the pain threshold to win races or break records, and of course they were super fit to start with

  • If you haven't exercised for a while, but feel ok than you are not overdoing it. Once more NOT TRUE, we are all guilty of doing too much when we decide to get fit, we all want instant results. This is particularly true of people of people coming back to exercise after a lay off, they expect to return to the level of fitness they were at before. It pays to be realistic with your workouts, and take time to build back up to your previous level
