Lose weight The Monkey World Way--- by Laurie whyman

Our primate relatives can suffer from the traumas of poor diet and obesity ( with our misguided love)
Posted: Friday 30th December 2011

There is a world famous primate rescue centre in Dorset UK, Monkey World a few miles from where I live, and they do the most amazing work rescuing various of our closest relations from the abuses visited on these magnificent creatures by probably misguided individuals, who think the young of various monkeys, chimps and other primates are so cute, (which they obviously are!) that they would make great companions, or even child substitutes, Michael Jackson with Bubbles is a perfect example.

The problem is when they mature, they get aggressive and then have to be destroyed or sent to a zoo.

“So what has does this have to do with losing weight?” you may be thinking

Dr Alison Cronin one of the founders of Monkey World was talking on the radio regarding an orang -utan that was rescued from South Africa a while ago from a family who was feeding her on processed food, sweets, chips and all the things that we eat that make us obese, and also would include all the health risks associated with obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease, strokes etc etc, plus the creature was confined in a cage as she was now to large for them to control, and had virtually no exercise

Dr Cronin went on to say the poor animal weighed around 100 kgs, when the average weight for a female orang-utan is around 35 kgs, and that because of how stressful the whole experience had been for her, that a strict diet to get her weight off was too much of a health risk.

So for her  to achieve an effective weight loss, she was just given exactly the same food as all her new orang-utan friends, mainly fresh fruit and vegetables, with some protein, and after a few months had lost a quarter of her body weight, and from having to roll across the floor to get about as she was so fat, she is now able to interact with the others in her group, climbing ropes, and playing as a normal orang-utan would. Her weight continues to drop and she is on course to reach her correct weight, and she has become a surrogate mother to some of the orphans that have been rescued recently, which is another success story for Monkey World.

The moral of the story is that that avoiding processed food, and eating fresh produce instead, with a little exercise works for our closest animal relatives, just as it will for us.

If you are holidaying in Dorset, or if you are lucky like me to live there, Monkey World is a great day out for all ages, and by visiting you will help to keep Dr Cronin and her dedicated team in the business of saving apes from misery.
